2013: Lessons for 2014

Wrote this at the beginning of the year.

I’d like to enter 2014 with lessons from ’13.

Didn’t know that a negative can be used so positively 🙂

Don’t be an idiot. Don’t be a tart. Don’t make promises you can’t fulfil, feelings are like houses of cards. Don’t be hasty, don’t break hearts, and don’t treat anyone with disregard.

Don’t ever be rude, don’t always agree and don’t ever, ever do something you’ll regret permanently. If you’re tempted, just don’t do it. Don’t think you’ll slip out eloquently.

Don’t hate your enemies. Don’t underestimate them. Don’t get personal, violent and don’t misrepresent them.

Don’t always dismiss their words as rubbish (at least not all the time). But when they get nasty, season them with rosemary and thyme.

Don’t stop experimenting. Don’t stop learning. Don’t stifle creativity through mundane everyday living. Don’t stop travelling. Don’t stop talking. Don’t stop asking and don’t stop reading. Don’t ignore the wise words of some, just because you thought at first they sounded dumb.

Don’t change for the sake of changing. And don’t always be the same. Don’t laugh when you’re not happy. Don’t cringe at the slightest disdain. Don’t smile when you don’t mean it. Don’t show that you’re blue. Don’t anger too easily, friendship cannot be fixed with glue.

Don’t drive too fast and do silly dangerous things. Don’t forget there’s people who need you, and on you they’re relying. Don’t be impatient with them, don’t stinge on listening. Don’t get loud and lose your cool, because even if they hurt, they will say nothing.

Don’t stay out late, don’t go at all. And don’t do that again. Don’t say hello and never call.

Don’t be cold and oh-so-pragmatic, don’t forget we’re human too. Don’t say things to others that doesn’t to you sound cool.

Don’t stray, don’t ever go away. Don’t let old feelings stop you from better things today. Don’t always be so serious. Don’t keep words in your heart. Don’t be afraid to love again. Don’t need to always be on your guard.

Don’t carry things too heavy, like Frodo and his ring. Especially not memories, and they’re far too thorny a thing.

But memories are good, so keep them locked precious.

Yet, you don’t drive in reverse, look ahead and fulfil the wishes.

Happy New Year!
